Fourteenth entry corresponding to the post series in which we are compiling different terms in a glossary of footwear concepts (14). Within our field, there are numerous terms that refer to important elements in the manufacture and design of shoes.

We continue with other concepts from the world of footwear arranged in alphabetical order (Translator’s note: the alphabetical order is lost in the translation from Spanish to English).

Ball or joint perimeter

It is the circumference of the last in the area of the joint. On the last, it is measured from the lateral point to the medial point of the ball.

Shoe tree

It is done to simulate the shape of the shoe, such as the toe, heel, leg, even the entire shoe.

Cut-outs

The punch line is a row of holes that can be the same size, or alternate between various sizes. The gap is made regularly along the edges of the upper parts of the shoe.

Foot

Extremity of either of the two lower limbs of a human being, which serves to support the body and walk.

Sole

It is the part or element of the footwear that is in contact with the ground. It can be made of different materials such as leather, rubber and polymers.

Shaped sole

It is a floor formed by a mold in PVC, rubber or similar, by an injection technique from a galosh.

Assembly sole

Also called insole, its function is to reinforce the footwear. It is usually made of a rigid cardboard, plastic or other materials. Provides a better structure in the interior of the shoe.

Insole

It is the piece of padded foam on which the foot rests. It can be removable or glued. In high-end footwear, these types of padded insoles are made of EVA foam or molded PU.

Anatomical insole

It refers to the piece of foam, padded, on which the foot rests. It can be removable or can be glued. In high-end footwear, these types of padded insoles are made of EVA foam or molded PU.
