Glossary of footwear concepts (12)

Twelfth entry corresponding to the series of posts in which we are compiling different terms in a glossary of footwear concepts (12). Within our field, there are numerous terms that refer to important elements in the manufacture and design of shoes.

We continue with other concepts from the world of footwear arranged in alphabetical order (Translator’s Note: the alphabetical order is lost in the translation into English).

Lateral or external side

It is the outside of the foot or shoe, that is, the side that does not arch.

Medial side or inner side

It refers to the inside of the foot or shoe, the arched area.

Ribbed sole

They make up the pattern that we find on the bottom of the sole of a shoe, especially in boat-type shoes. The ribbed pattern helps dissipate water and prevent slipping.

Tongue

It is the piece that cushions the upper part of the foot. It is sewn to the vamp of the shoe, and sometimes also to the facing pieces. The tongue can have elastic straps to keep the piece centered, or a tab where the laces go through.

Awl

It is a punch with a wooden handle. Shoemakers often use awls to open the holes in the stitching on the welt.

Sand

Lowering or grinding are other of its meanings. Refers to the process of removing material through sanding. The shoe factory will use a special machine with a metal or stone wheel.

Parting line or separating line

In a sole mold, the parting line is the line that is created by the edges of the closure of the tool. The mold is divided by the separating line, and can have one or two planes where it is separated. An excess of rubber can come out of these lines that will have to be removed later.
